Eight skeletons of different ages of mammoths Mammuthus primigenius (Blumenbach, 1799) from the Tomsk region (the area of the village between tegul'det, river Chulym)
In the Tomsk region on the Chulym river in the autumn of 2002, eight complete skeletons and two incomplete skeletons of mammoths were found. Location near the village between tegul'det discovered by an expedition TRIAS GEO. All ten skeletons are part of the company's paleontological collection.
Location near the village of between tegul'det is a unique paleontological monument. In addition to eight complete skeletons of mammoths (one-year-old cub and two females of different ages), several thousand separate bones of mammoths were found here. All the bones are deposited in layers of ancient river sediments, which suggests that most of the mammoths died here as a result of a natural disaster. More than 70% of the bones belong to females and young of all ages, among which there are bones of embryos. At the same time, about 40% of them are cubs, so it is possible that the mammoths who died in this place belong to the same family group. Apparently, this location is the second after the location of Sevsk (Bryansk region) natural burial of such a group of mammoths.
Judging by the skeleton of an adult female, in this family group the mammoths were relatively small: no higher than 200-235 cm and a weight not exceeding 2.8 tons. the Individual age of this female mammoth is about 45 years, as indicated by the functioning tooth of the last shift (M3). Including fragments of the skull and lower jaw, more than 65% of the bones of the skeleton survived.
The second of the well-preserved skeletons, belongs to a young female mammoth 8-9 years, judging by its size, features of bones and teeth (change of teeth dp4/M1 in mammoths approximately corresponds to this age). But this was not yet fully grown pet. About 50% of the bones of this skeleton are preserved.
The skeleton of a one-year-old mammoth is only the second complete skeleton of a mammoth of this age in the world: it has a second-shift tooth (dp3). On the bones of this cub found pathology of cervical vertebrae-fused 3rd and 4th vertebrae. Good preservation of the skeleton allows you to see small parts of the long bones of the legs, not yet fully ossified and not fully fused together. At least 80% of the bones are preserved in the skeleton, including fragments of the skull and lower jaw.
The small size of the body and the death of animals of all ages indicate adverse natural conditions for the life of mammoths in the area. Most likely, they died at the very end of the Pleistocene period 16 – 12 thousand years ago. The absence of damage to human bones and river deposits, which found the bones, suggest that the mass death of a large group of mammoths in the area due to natural phenomena.
